Ornot CX Camp Day 1
In order to build a little fitness, practice hand ups, and get out of the city we packed up the van and took our CX team to the foothills of the Sierra for three days of riding in the woods. What follows is a report of the good, the bad and the how we got lost...Well, that part comes later.
Destination:
Arnold, Ca is 152 scenic miles from San Francisco. Here the air grows thin, the dust gets fine, and the views never end.
The Ellwood Cabin
Old cabins are the best. Filled with treasures from generations of families, Randy, was kind enough to offer up his for the weekend complete with a plethora of wood paneling, a currated collection of eccentric bear posters, and a kitchen with 40 year old cinnamon to keep it interesting.
Sooooo, let's ride?
Half hour deep into vacay mode we grew antsy. Either it was time to break out some food and drink, or ride. We rode.
All the roads
Just above the cabin is a series of trails ranging from rolling fire roads to steep shale descents and single track that'll give you goosebumps. We got a taste of all of it on our first day.
Closed
Washouts happen. No problem, we know another way.
Visit to the moon
End of Summer in the Sierra means dry and dusty. Our bikes were coated with a layer of the finest moon dust you could imagine. This coincidentally is not awesome for your chain. It is awesome for your eyes and nose, Ornot.
Rural vibes
The trails were in terrific condition and we had them all to ourselves.
Water water errywhere.
We crossed this same creek four times on this one ride. Our shoes would remain wet for the rest of the weekend.
Let's race
Wait a minute where are we? Aren't we doing a big ride tomorrow? I think other people are showing up to the cabin soon...
Found it
Perfect summer temps, so lets just hang out in our kits for awhile and enjoy this sunset? Sounds good. maybe we should play some horse shoes or something. Oh wait, we need more beer.
That was fun!
We were pretty excited about the riding in the area and couldn't wait for the next day where we had a big ride planned up higher in the mountains. What could go wrong?
Here's our route.
