Why we made it
A mountain shell, recut for the bike
Mountaineering shells keep the weather out, but they're cut long and straight. Bend over the bars and all that fabric bunches up and flaps in the wind. We shortened the front, dropped the back, and added a hem cord to stop the flapping. It’s still relaxed enough to wear with pants.
FAQ
What is the Ornot Fog Eater?
A waterproof, packable rain jacket made from 3-layer Pertex® Shield with fully taped seams and a PFC-free DWR. It's cut for riding, with articulated sleeves, a longer drop in back and a 2-way zipper, but relaxed enough to wear commuting or around town. The hood fits under a helmet, and the jacket packs into its own hand pocket.
How does the Fog Eater fit?
True to size, so choose your usual Ornot size. It's cut with room for a layer underneath, a dropped tail for the riding position, and articulated sleeves. Relaxed enough to wear off the bike with pants.
Is the Fog Eater fully waterproof?
Yes. It's made from 3-layer Pertex® Shield with fully taped seams and a waterproof 2-way zipper. The DWR finish is PFC-free.
Does the hood fit over a helmet?
No, and that's on purpose. The hood is sized to go under your helmet, which keeps your head dry in a real downpour and keeps the hood from catching wind. It has a 3-point adjustment and a rain peak, and it works as a normal hood off the bike.
How small does it pack?
It packs into its own left hand pocket, into a ~6x6inch pouch. Small enough to live in a bar bag between storms. 281g for a size MD
Can I reach my jersey pockets while wearing it?
Yes. Open the 2-way zipper from the bottom to get to your jersey pockets, or to vent without unzipping the chest.
Is the Fog Eater good for commuting?
That's a big part of why we made it. The relaxed cut, hand pockets and hood work just as well walking from the bike rack to the office as they do on the ride in.
What's the difference between the Fog Eater and the Magic Shell?
The Magic Shell is our stretchy, close-fitting cold weather riding jacket with rear pockets. The Fog Eater is a lighter, packable rain shell with a hood and a more relaxed cut.
Does this jacket have a best friend?
Yes, his name is Karl. He's a San Francisco local and they have a love/hate relationship.
