Freelance Graphic Designer

Graphic Designer / Cyclist / Visual communicator

This is a dream job for a talented designer ready to flex their design muscles and help shape our brand! If you're passionate about both design and bikes, this job is your destiny, Ornot.

Dear future designer,

  • Are you ready to work with a small team where your ideas can easily come to life?
  • Do you wish that your job wasn't so corporate?
  • Are you interested in building actual things along with digital things and then figuring out a fun way to tell people about these things?
  • Can you construct a sentence that doesn't use "things" 3 times?
  • Have you ever been just a little bummed when a client / marketing director asked you to "make the logo bigger"?
  • If you've always wanted creative freedom and ownership over projects and have also mastered your process and "design execution", this might be a perfect opportunity for you.

Who is Ornot?

We are a small but mighty cycling apparel company based in San Francisco with most of our clothing production right here in California. Actually, if you don't know who we are yet, you should probably cruise our website and IG feed.

Our mission is to create sustainable cycling apparel and accessories that are made to last. The company was founded by a Graphic Designer as "minimally branded cycling apparel" with our 2013 founding phrase - You could be a rolling billboard, Ornot. This was a reaction to the lazy, logo driven design that had dominated the cycling industry for years. Now that many brands have followed suit with minimal branding, our additional focus is sustainability and responsible business practices. We are always evaluating our supply chain, fabric choices, and production partners. We're proud to be the first, and only 1 of 2 Climate Neutral Certified cycling apparel brands. We hope that other companies follow our lead.

Join us and work as a full-time Graphic Designer creating everything from graphic patterns, our website, collaborations, digital marketing collateral, motion graphics, video projects, color systems, printed projects, you name it. You will be in a unique position to determine the visual growth and evolution of the brand. Initially, we're looking for someone who can jump right in and, not only execute on projects already in the works, but also identify design opportunities. Over the long term, we're seeking someone who can continue to drive the design process along with our creative director.

We are looking for:

  • Design Skills. You've had at least a few years of professional design experience and have honed your craft. You can iterate, create different directions and articulate the choices made in your designs.
  • Self starter and finisher. It sounds cliche, but you will be given a long rope, with that rope comes responsibility. The hardest part of a project can be that last 5%, you should pride yourself on buttoning everything up.
  • Details are very important. This should be part of your process.
  • Tech Savvy. Because it's 2021 and we sell mostly on-line, our tools are also online, you'll get to learn our systems and our tools (they're all user-friendly)
  • Design tools. The Adobe suite is pretty standard business here, but there are no rules when it comes to what tools you prefer to use to get the job done.
  • Bike rides. You should be able to do these. We often have some of our best ideas on "work rides".
  • Design Skills. Yes, listing this one twice, typography, photography, color theory, and those skills that are a little less obvious, like simplifying complex concepts and storytelling. If you are well versed, this is all boiler plate so we will stop here because you should...Apply!

Final words

We're based in San Francisco and prefer a local candidate. We're still figuring out our post-covid working situation but we do have an office in the Mission that we're getting back to (at least a few days a week). We don't have Sr. / mid / Jr. positions in the organization. We all work together to get things done.  If you're not local but you think this job was made *exactly* for you, we would still like to hear from you. How to apply ----> Send an email to with the subject line "Hire me, Ornot". Include your portfolio, resume, your location, and any other information you think we should know about you. Bonus points for those who go the extra mile with a video. Thanks for making it this far, writing job postings is not my favorite activity, I'd rather be riding.
